I've only read Joe Hill's "Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead"and recent Bram Stoker Award Winner, Lisa Morton's "Sparks Fly Upward" stories, but I am already a little in love with John Joseph Adams' zombie anthology The Living Dead (2008). These frightening, witty and unconventional zombie tales remind the audience why these contemporary masters of horror are so amazing. With short stories from Clive Barker, Stephen King, Poppy Z. Brite and Neil Gaiman, this book is a must-have for any horror fan and writer.
A new anthology, The Living Dead 2, is available for pre-order on Amazon.com with writers such as Max Brooks, Carrie Ryan and Cherie Priest. Yes, I am shame-faced since I don't know who they are, but I cannot wait to read their work.
If you're a zombie writer, crawl over to the flash fiction Web site, Flashes in the Dark, and submit to their Resurrection Contest that ends on June 19!
I hadn't heard of these zombie anthos. Very nice. Particularly the first one.I want.
ReplyDeleteAlso kind of you to promote Flashes In The Dark contest. You guys rock. ;-)
Living Dead 2 sounds great!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for promoting Flashes in the Dark. I'll be proud to add a link to your site.
Jodi, you should want. It's an orgasmic read. If you're really into anthos like I am, check out Marvin Kaye's Masterpieces of Terror...(http://www.amazon.com/Masterpieces-Terror-Supernatural-Treasury-Spellbinding/dp/0385185499/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275475344&sr=8-1). There are a lot of unusual pieces and hardly-seen (like Tolkien's short story "Riddles in the Dark.")
ReplyDeleteLori, that would be amazing. I have always admired your site, but have yet to submit. I'm so glad that you, too, promote the good ol' baddies like vampires and werewolves and zombies (oh my!), as a lot of publications don't. (However, I have seen a lot more accepting vamps and werewolves due to the recent Team Twilight.)
Here is another great antho I failed to mention: http://www.amazon.com/Scary-Stories-Barry-Moser/dp/0811854140/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275475749&sr=8-5. You got Joyce Carol freakin Oates, Roald Dahl, Shirley Jackson...My dream is to put together an awesome anthology (nice alliteration, Shane...).
